Vic and April lay curled up beside one another on a small corner of the derelict platform. They had almost left it when they saw that it had no food, or water, or even an exit to offer them. But something made them stay. They were too tired to keep walking and decided to take another short rest at the platform until they felt they could continue their journey. It took quite a lot of effort to come to that decision, however; they knew they needed to keep walking, but the reason was hazy. April knew the thought would come to her after she’d had a chance to rest, though.

When she tried to communicate that she wanted to stay at the platform for a bit, she started off by voicing her thought. She struggled to hear the words coming out of her own mouth and knew that Vic wouldn’t hear them if she couldn’t. April tried to get Vic’s attention, but Vic was far too exhausted and distracted to realize what was happening. The scene between them might have been funny if their situation hadn’t been so miserable.

By the time April managed to get her friend’s attention, it was clear that communication between them would still be difficult. Each teenager was able to speak no louder than a whisper, no matter how hard they tried. Veins stood out in her forehead as April put all of her remaining energy into shouting the words. But all that came out of her was a rasp.

They attempted lipreading, but the only thing either one of them seemed to understand was the confused “what?” whispered whenever they didn’t understand what the other was saying. Eventually, they came to an understanding by miming their actions.

Slowly and without much energy, they picked a portion of the platform that didn’t have too much mould nearby and began to sweep away the broken glass with their feet. They could hear it scraping faintly along the tiles as their feet pushed it all out of the way, but it was a sound that they had to strain to hear.

Once the area was clear and safe enough to lie down on, they set up a makeshift bed with their coats. Resting their heads on their backpacks, they curled up close together, both for comfort and for warmth, and tried to sleep.

But as had been the case every other time, April found it impossible to sleep. The flickering lights and the lack of sound that bordered on sensory-depravation made even closing her eyes a challenge. And the fact that she couldn’t sleep despite the exhaustion only added to her frustration. April found that the more her brain churned around this frustration, the harder it was for her to fall asleep. It was a vicious cycle.

April was certain that if Vic fell asleep before her, she could scream at the top of her lungs without even coming close to waking her friend. But she knew Vic was struggling to sleep as well. They kept shifting position, gripping April’s hand tighter with each minor adjustment.
